Diabetes is the sixth leading cause of death and the fifth leading cause of death from disease. Both Diabetes and obesity are taking a toll on the U.S. health-care system. Health insurers and disability carriers are reaching out to members, physicians and employers about ways to curb the rise of these diseases. As a result,the Government is spending an increasing amount of its healthcare budget on dealing with this epidemic almost 1 in 4 people has diabetes. That’s more than a million men, women and children. But what is really alarming is that half of them don’t even know they are diabetic so they don’t treat the disease or make the lifestyle changes that can help reduce the risks. If left untreated, diabetes can result in heart disease, blindness and even amputation.

On the other hand, if detected early, treatment along with lifestyle changes can greatly reduce the risks associated with diabetes. This makes it even more important that all of us are well-informed on the facts about diabetes and how it can be prevented and treated.

What is diabetes?

Diabetes is an illness that occurs as a result of problems with the production and  supply of insulin and body. Most of the food we eat is turned into glucose a form of sugar that we use as  a source of energy to provide power for our muscles and other tissues. In order for our muscles and other tissues to absorb glucose from our blood,   we need a hormone called insulin.

As a result, people with diabetes cannot use enough of the glucose in the food they eat. This leads to an increase in the amount of glucose in the blood. This high level of glucose or ‘high blood sugar’’ is called hyperglycemia. High levels of glucose in the blood can lead to serious complications.

 What are the types of diabetes?

Type I diabetes, is caused when the body’s defense system attacks the insulin producing calls. People with type I diabetes produce very little or no insulin. The disease can affect people of any age but usually occurs in children or young adults. People with this form of diabetes need injections of insulin every day to control the levels of glucose in their blood.

Type  2 diabetes,   is the most common type of diabetes. It is due to either a decrease in production of insulin in the body or inability to use its own insulin effectively. Usually they can control the glucose in their blood by watching their diet, taking regular exercise, oral medication, and possibly insulin type 2 diabetes is most common in people older than 45 who are overweight. However, because of increased obesity among the young, it is becoming more common in children as well. Other rarer types of diabetes also exist.

What are the symptoms of diabetes?

Individuals can experience different symptoms, and sometimes there may be no obvious symptoms, but some of the most common symptoms of diabetes are;

* Abnormal thirst and a dry mouth

* Frequent urination

*Extreme tiredness/lack of energy

*Sudden weight loss

*Slow-healing wounds

*Recurrent infections

* Blurred vision

* Extreme hunger

Who is likely to get diabetes?

Anyone, anywhere, at any age can develop diabetes. However, a number of factors contribute to the likelihood of someone developing diabetes.

Age:  the older you are the greater your risk og diabetes.

Obesity:  the more overweight you are, the greater your risk of diabetes.

Pregnancy: diabetes during previous pregnancy or giving birth to a baby weighing

More than 9 pounds.

Family history:  research has shown that people are more at risk if there is a history of diabetes in close family members.

Physical inactivity: research has shown that people who do not lead an active life are more at risk of developing type 2 diabetes. The less exercise you do the greater your chances of developing diabetes.

High blood pressure or abnormal lipids

What are the complications related to diabetes?

Diabetes is a chronic, life-long condition that requires careful control. Without proper management it can lead to various complications such as cardiovascular disease, kidney failure, blindness and nerve damage

Why is early detection of diabetes important?

Many adults have had diabetes for several years before their symptoms are recognized. By the time they are diagnosed a great many have already started to develop the complications of diabetes – visual impairment, kidney failure,  heart disease, stroke and nerve damage. Spotting diabetes early means that it can be treated and the risk of the serious complications can be greatly reduced. If you have any of the symptoms or risk factors associated with diabetes, you should talk to a healthcare professional.

How is diabetes treated?             

Today, there is no cure for diabetes, but effective treatment exists. If you have access to the appropriate medication, quality of care and good medical advice, you should be able to lead an should be able to lead an active  and healthy life and reduce the risk of developing complications. A combination of controlled diet, physical exercise and if required, medication can help control diabetes.

How can diabetes be prevented?

Public and professional awareness of the risk factors and the symptoms of diabetes are an important step towards its control and prevention.

 Primary prevention: identifies and protects individuals at risk from developing diabetes. It therefore has an impact by reducing both the need for diabetes care and the need to treat diabetes-related complications.

 Whil there is yet no conclusive evidence to suggest that type 1 diabetes can be prevented; primary prevention of type 2 diabetes is potentially possible.

 Lifestyle change aimed at weight reduction and increased physical activity are important objectives in the prevention of type 2 diabetes.

The benefits of reducing body weight and increasing physical activity are not confined to type 2 diabetes: they also play a role in reducing heart disease, high blood pressure, etc.

Secondary prevention : involves the early detection and prevention of complications, therefore reducing the need for treatment.

Action taken early in the course of diabetes is more beneficial in terms of quality of life  and is more cost-effective, especially if this action can prevent hospitalization.

There is now conclusive evidence that good control of blood glucose levels can substantially reduce the risk of developing complications and slow their progression in all types of diabetes.
